About Road Safety

Road transportation is vital to any transportation company. Transportation via road networks is risky in terms of interruptions due to road accidents and incidents. This is attributable to the nature of road transportation's pool of risks which fall within the following 3 clusters:

  • Roads & Environment;
  • Vehicles;
  • Road users particularly drivers.

Therefore, the road transport system is complex, as each cluster is prone to certain failures for example, deteriorated driving performance, compromised vehicle performance and unpredictable road conditions. Today, road crashes are climbing to the worrying position of becoming the world's No. 1 killer and leaving the millions of survivors incapacitated. In 2013 alone, commuting accidents accounted for 44% of the total reported industrial accidents in Malaysia. According to PDRM report, 6706 fatalities were recorded in 2015. The following statistics are a testimony to the seriousness of road crashes in this country:

  • There are more than 400,000 reported crashes on Malaysian roads annually;
  • Road fatalities numbers are approaching 7,000 per year and are still increasing;
  • 60% of all road deaths are motorcyclists with the next highest being car drivers at 21%
  • Economic losses from road crashes exceed RM 9 billion each year;
  • Such crashes account for 45% of those seeking medical treatment
  • Road crashes are the cause of death for 75% of people below the age of 40.

Aggressive driving has been the main cause for 18% - 32% of crashes over the last 6 years.

Our Services

Drivers’ competency training and consultancy

For years, many countries had adopted a basic test of driving competency where the required pass standards for competency tended to focus on safety techniques for managing vehicle control and making safe and controlled progress. Once drivers passed the initial competency test, they never needed to prove their driving ability again. Yet, research has found that almost half of experienced drivers would not pass a basic safety road test if they had to retake it today.

Many companies do not see the importance of driver training as the majority see training as a cost rather than an investment. For us, it is an investment that helps a company save costs in the long run as it increases productivity and efficiency by reducing accident rates and insurance claims.

Our first client was Unilever Malaysia, an internationally based consumer goods company; and they have continued to be with us till today. Over the years, KPX has grown. Despite stiff competition, KPX has earned its reputation and recognition by providing quality training and services to the industry. Through referrals from very satisfied clients, KPX has added to its portfolio companies such as Lafarge Cement Berhad, Bintang Group, Nexus Mega Carrier, Tesco Berhad, NYK Lines, Perbadanan Putra Jaya, Monier Roof Tiles Sdn Bhd, Konsotium Logistik Berhad, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, among others. KPX has also received strong support from local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which has been a key factor in KPX’s growth. Currently KPX Sdn Bhd is servicing more than 45 SMEs.

Fleet safety program and consultancy

The training that KPX provides covers transportation’s pool of risks from 3 main clusters; road and environment, vehicles, and road users or drivers. Driver training is just a small part of the fleet safety programme that KPX provides. KPX’s programme is all about safety, not just driving skills. It covers driver management, journey management and vehicle management. Driver management includes being fit to drive, driver procedures, driver competency, defensive driving techniques, response to hazards, vehicle dynamics and natural forces, and the needs of other road users.

Journey management includes driver behaviour, identification of hazard and route risks, trip schedule, rest and recreation, emergency response plan and accident reports and investigation. Last but not least is vehicle management that covers a vehicle’s major components and safety equipment, vehicle maintenance and post lesson written assessment.

Driver’s Competency

KPX is involved in the development of common standards of technical competency for Malaysia’s Road Transport Department. KPX won the contract for this project in 2013 to deliver to the Road Transport Department the “Penambahbaikan Kurikulum Pendidikan Pemandu Kelas D (Car) Manual dan Automatik” which consisted of learning materials such as text books, instructor manuals, tester manuals and other teaching tools. This new curriculum differs from the previous curriculum in that it will assess learner drivers on their attitudes and behaviours on the road. It is more comprehensive and promotes cognitive and psychomotor skills. We also trained 600 officers from the Road Transport Department and 1000 driving instructors throughout Malaysia for the implementation of this new curriculum.

Fleet Safety Program

KPX works directly with companies to develop a customised fleet safety programme that is specific to their needs and requirements. A recent remarkable achievement is the KPX’s design and execution of a land transport fleet safety programme for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd’s, Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipe Line Project extending over 520 kms at a project cost of RM 3 billion where KPX contributed to the significant safety milestone of 5 Million Man-hours without any Lost Time Injury (LTI) from May 2013 to April 2014.
